TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe latest AI assistant sensation from China, DeepSeek, is under scrutiny after reportedly being hit by a cyber attack. Despite no details being released, experts warn that artificial intelligence models, especially those based on open source, are at risk of exploitation by cybercriminals for malicious purposes.

Leonid Bezvershenko, a security researcher from Kaspersky GReAT, revealed that AI utilization for cyber activities is quite widespread. “We have seen similar trends with other popular AI models,” said Leonid in a written statement on Thursday, January 30.

Creating email phishing, translating texts, creating scripts, and conducting open-source research to produce more targeted and convincing content are some of the intended uses of AI assistants.

According to Bezvershenko, however, these tools can also be used as bait to spread scams and malicious applications. Bezvershenko highlighted DeepSeek's open-source nature as promoting transparency and innovation on one side but also presenting security risks on the other.

"Its open-source nature is a double-edged sword," he said, adding that users cannot always be sure how data is handled while using open-source tools.

"In 2024 alone, our open-source scanner detected more than 12,000 malicious packages in open repositories," he said.

Senior Web Content Analyst at Kaspersky, Olga Svistunova, added that the suspected cyber attack and the surge of new users on DeepSeek have caused disruptions in the registration process, which was exploited by cybercriminals.

"This situation can be exploited by cybercriminals to steal user credentials through fake DeepSeek web pages."

Olga added that attackers could use fake registration pages to gather users' email and password, which could then be used to access their accounts, both in DeepSeek and other services, if the same password is used.

Additionally, new crypto tokens have emerged, marketed under the guise of DeepSeek, despite the company having no official ties to the brand.
