TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Minister of Transmigration (Wamentrans) Viva Yoga Mauladi stated that one of the challenges in achieving food self-sufficiency is the stagnation of food production, so intensification and extensification efforts are important to overcome this issue. "The challenge must be faced and managed so it does not become an obstacle," said Viva Yoga Mauladi in Jakarta on Thursday, January 30, 2025, as quoted from Antara.
He mentioned that the stagnation of food production could be seen from the decline in rice production by around 1.1 percent during the 2019-2023 period, as well as the low productivity of fish cultivation land, which is only 0.6 tons per hectare per year.
Furthermore, he also conveyed the high dependence on imported products, such as data in 2023 showing the import of 3.1 million tons of rice, 2.8 million tons of salt, 52.3 percent of domestic demand for beef, and 78.6 percent of domestic demand for milk.
Viva Yoga also highlighted the existence of food insecure areas, with approximately 16 percent of Indonesia's total regencies/cities currently experiencing this issue. Another challenge is the massive land use conversion of around 80 thousand hectares during 2019-2024, especially in Java.
The decline in land quality or land degradation is also a challenge because 89.5 percent of the land is not sustainable for cultivation. Meanwhile, the last challenge is the lack of regeneration among farmers, resulting in the phenomenon of ageing farmers, with around 70 percent of farmers and fishermen being over 43 years old.
To address these various challenges, Wamentrans also proposed several steps that can be taken to achieve food self-sufficiency, such as increasing and improving the productivity of agricultural land with food barns at the village, district, and national levels.
He also stated that there needs to be a sustainable increase in food land availability, strengthening various qualities of food system governance, consumption, and agricultural productivity, and addressing food security and vulnerability. According to him, intensification and extensification efforts are needed to increase food production.
Intensification efforts include increasing productivity through agricultural production facilities, such as certified seeds, fertilizers, irrigation water, and other support; reducing harvest losses with post-harvest machinery, such as harvesters and rice milling machines; and increasing planting indexes through the optimization of existing land, irrigation water, and land processing. "Meanwhile, extensification is done by adding paddy fields and creating new land," said Viva Yoga.
