TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Dewi Soekarno, the fifth wife of former Indonesian President Soekarno, has announced the launch of a political party for animal protection in Japan.
As reported by The Japan Times on Wednesday, Dewi aims to field candidates in this summer's election for Japan's upper house of parliament.
As the chairwoman of the political party, the 85-year-old Dewi plans to run for a seat after regaining Japanese citizenship and relinquishing Indonesian citizenship.
Animal protection is the core policy of the new group, named 12 Heiwa To. Heiwa means peace, while 12 can be read as "wan-nyan", a combination of Japanese onomatopoeia for the sound of dogs barking and cats meowing.
At a press conference in Tokyo on Wednesday, Dewi stated that the group's first and most important step is to enforce a law banning the eating of dogs and cats.
The party said they will protect dogs and work towards coexistence with humans.
The group also aims to establish a special agency to oversee animal abuse and to tighten punishment for such acts.
At the press conference, election planner Shinnosuke Fujikawa said the group's target for the House of Councillors election is to win at least two or three seats.
