TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Disney is set to open its seventh global theme park and resort in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on Yas Island.
Yas Island is a popular tourist destination in Abu Dhabi, with a recorded 34 million visits in 2023, a 38 percent increase from the previous year, despite Abu Dhabi's population being around 2.5 million.
The addition of Disneyland will further enhance the list of family-friendly attractions, joining Warner Bros World Yas Island, SeaWorld Yas Island, and Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi.
Miral and Disney Collaboration
In the process of developing the theme park, Disney will collaborate with Miral, a leading creator of destinations and immersive experiences in Abu Dhabi, overseeing the development and operation of the resort. The creative design and operational guidance will be led by Disney Imagineers to ensure that the park captures immersive storytelling and world-class experiences similar to other Disney amusement parks.
Disney CEO Bob Iger promises a spectacular theme park that combines contemporary architecture with advanced technology. "Disneyland Abu Dhabi will be authentically Disney and distinctly Emirati - an oasis of extraordinary Disney entertainment that is at the crossroads of the world," he said in a statement, as reported by Daily Mail.
The selection of Abu Dhabi as a new location is deemed ideal, according to Disney Experience unit chair Josh D'Amaro. Its strategic position attracts more than 120 million tourists who visit Abu Dhabi and Dubai every year. Being located by the sea, the park provides Disney with the opportunity to introduce new experiences, particularly creating an innovative resort destination, marking a new chapter in amusement park development.
Disneyland Abu Dhabi will offer themed accommodations, unique dining and shopping experiences, and various new attractions that blend Disney's heritage with the beauty of Abu Dhabi's architecture and cultural identity. "What we are creating with Disney in Abu Dhabi is a whole new world of imagination — an experience that will inspire generations across the region and the world, creating magical moments and memories that families will treasure forever," said Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chair of Miral.
However, Bob Iger has not confirmed when the new amusement park will start operating. In an interview with CNBC, as quoted from People, he mentioned that the planning and development process will take between 18 months and two years, while the construction will take around five years. "But we're not making any commitments right now," he stated.
The first Disneyland was opened in 1955 in Anaheim, California, followed by Walt Disney World in Florida in 1971. Then, Tokyo Disneyland opened in 1983, Disneyland Paris in 1992, Hong Kong Disneyland in 2005, and Shanghai Disney Resort in 2016.
