TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump announced Sunday, January 26, 2025, that he would impose sanctions on Colombia for refusing to accept flights of deported migrants.
"I have just been informed that two repatriation flights from the United States, with a large number of Criminal Illegals, were not allowed to land in Colombia," Trump said on his Truth Social platform, adding that he had directed his administration to take "urgent and decisive retaliatory action."
Trump said he would impose an emergency tariff of 25 percent on all Colombian goods entering the United States, which would be doubled a week later to 50 percent. He also announced that the United States would impose a travel ban and immediately revoke US visas granted to Colombian officials and all of its allies and supporters.
His remarks came just after Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced that he had blocked US military planes carrying deported Colombians back to Colombia.
"A migrant is not a criminal and should be treated with the dignity that every human being deserves. That is why I am ordering the return of a United States military plane carrying Colombian migrants," Petro said on X.
American immigrant advocates argue that people seeking asylum -- illegal migrants -- are not criminals, a term Trump has used to denigrate and denigrate would-be migrants.
The new measures also include increased customs and border protection for all Colombian citizens and cargo on national security grounds.
President Trump said he would impose emergency financial, banking and fiscal sanctions on Colombia. Petro's refusal to fly has endangered US national security and public safety.
"These steps are just the beginning. We will not allow the Government of Colombia to violate its legal obligations regarding the admission and return of Criminals they force into the United States!" Trump warned.
