TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several Indonesian citizens who were victims of captivity and torture in Myanmar are waiting for assistance to be returned to their homeland.
"My son and dozens of other Indonesian citizens can no longer stand being there. They said, maybe if they had a cellphone they could provide evidence of the cruelty or violence they experienced there," said RD, the father of one of the victims with the initials I, when contacted by ANTARA on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
RD said that on January 3, 2025, his son and 12 other Indonesian citizens escaped from their old company, but their efforts failed. They — 12 men and one woman — were then held captive in a room for one day and two nights, one of whom was slapped by the company boss. After the captivity, they were taken to the gate post on January 5.
"My son thought he would be sent home, because after the slapping incident, they were promised that they would be sent home by special soldiers within 1-2 days," said RD. However, they were sold to another company that carried out more severe torture. The security guards at the company were equipped with electric shocks.
"My son and the others have really given up on the situation," said RD. "Three people have been victims of sadistic beatings. They were all beaten, even electrocuted."
RD said his son received threats and intimidation at his new workplace. Those who do not work seriously, the personnel will make the Indonesian citizens (experience things) worse than death.
According to RD, the last time he communicated with his son was on Tuesday afternoon, January 21, 2025, secretly, when I informed him that he had received threats to be killed if he did not work properly. RD hopes that the Indonesian government will immediately repatriate the Indonesian citizens who are suspected of being victims of human trafficking (TPPO).
"My son hopes that the government will evacuate them from Myanmar as soon as possible. That is their cry," said RD.
Since the case was reported last November, RD has coordinated with the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Migrant Workers Union (SBMI) to try to free his son and other Indonesian citizens. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs promised a meeting in the third week of February 2025.
Previously, ANTARA reported that Indonesia is still trying to repatriate Indonesian migrant workers who are currently stuck in Myanmar, including through diplomacy with Thailand. "We are continuing to try to free the remaining ones in Myanmar. Of course, I cannot say how because it will affect them later," said Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI) Abdul Kadir Karding on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
