TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The 2025 Taiwan Lantern Festival officially started on Wednesday night, February 12, 2025. There is something interesting about the lantern festival celebration held every year.
Deputy Head of the Taiwan Tourism Administration Lin Hsin Jen said the materials used in the lantern festival are recycled. "After the pandemic, sustainable tourism has become a trend in the world, so we also use recycled materials to design lanterns. Because this year we also won the world baseball competition, we have baseball-themed lanterns," said Lin when met by Tempo in Taoyuan, Tuesday, February 11, 2025.
The 2025 Taiwan Lantern Festival was opened by President Lai Ching-Te. This is the first festival he has attended since he took office as President of Taiwan.
This year, the lantern festival, which carries the theme of infinity paradise, is centered in Taoyuan. The festival lasts for 13 days from February 12-25, 2025.
The festival is held every year on the 15th day after the Chinese New Year celebration. The festival theme changes according to the Chinese calendar. This year is the year of the snake, which is the idea in determining the concept of infinity.
According to Lin, the lantern festival is targeted to attract 10 million local and foreign tourists, as well as being the largest tourism event in Taiwan.
"We also call this event like Disneyland without a roller coaster," said Lin.
Together with a number of media and influencers from Indonesia, Tempo visited Taiwan on February 9-14, 2025. In addition to Taoyuan, the lantern festival will also take place in more than 20 regions in Taiwan.
Reported by ICRT, the government is offering attractive incentives for people who exchange lantern battery waste. The Taoyuan City Department of Environmental Protection said that during the 2025 Taiwan Lantern Festival, visitors can recycle batteries from lanterns in exchange for prizes.
Participants can bring two button cell batteries from the festival lanterns to the designated service booth. Batteries can also be exchanged at one of the 12 Taoyuan district sanitation offices for prizes.
In addition to batteries, visitors can also drop off recyclables, including plastic bottles, batteries and aluminum cans, at smart recycling machines located on the festival grounds. The reward is money saved in the form of credits on an iPASS card.
The department also said it will check nearly 300 vendors at the lantern festival to minimize the use of disposable tableware and items.
