TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. billionaire Elon Musk—a major donor for Trump’s 2024 election campaign—supported the call for the United States’ withdrawal from the United Nations (UN) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Republican senators at the end of February introduced a bill to terminate U.S. membership at the UN. The draft urged the cessation of all U.S. funding for the organization and the prohibition of U.S. involvement in UN peacekeeping missions.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, Republican Senator Mike Lee, in several posts on X, called for Washington to also withdraw from NATO.
"I agree," Musk said on X on Saturday night, as cited by Antara, in response to posts from right-wing U.S. political commentator Gunther Eagleman, who wrote “It’s time to leave NATO and the UN.”
After taking office on January 20, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the country’s membership from the World Health Organization (WHO), citing unfairness in its funding policies.
Trump also repeatedly criticized Europe for its low contributions to NATO's defense capabilities. He demanded that all NATO member countries increase defense spending to five percent of their respective GDP.
Meanwhile, in February, U.S. entrepreneur and podcaster Patrick Bet-David told the news agency RIA Novosti that Trump bypassed the policy of European NATO allies because he’s “not a fan of what NATO does.”
