Escalating Trade War: China Imposes New Import Tariffs on Canadian Agricultural Products

9 hours ago 16

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - On Saturday, March 8, 2025, China announced new import tariffs worth more than US$2.6 billion (Rp 42 trillion) on agricultural and food products from Canada. This is a response to Ottawa's similar actions in October 2024.

Beijing's move is equivalent to initiating a new trade war, largely driven by tariff threats from U.S. President Donald Trump.

The tariffs were announced by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce and are scheduled to take effect on March 20, 2025, local time. These new import tariffs on Canadian agricultural and food products imposed by Beijing are equivalent to the 100 percent and 25 percent duties that Canada imposed on Chinese-made electric vehicles and steel and aluminum products from the Bamboo Curtain Country four months ago.

Reuters reported that Beijing is likely to keep the door open for dialogue to discuss this trade issue. Canola products are not included in the list of increased import tariffs from Canada to China. Canola is one of Canada's leading exports in the world for agricultural products.

Several analysts view Beijing's actions as a warning. This refers to the Trump administration's move to reduce import duties by up to 25 percent from the threats made by the White House to Canada and Mexico if they imposed additional duties of up to 20 percent, similar to what Trump imposed on Chinese goods related to the flow of fentanyl.

"Canada's policy is a serious violation of the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and protective laws. Canada's discriminatory policies violate China's legitimate rights and interests," said the Chinese Ministry of Commerce in a statement.

The announcement stated that China would impose new import tariffs of up to 100 percent, or more than US$1 billion (Rp 16 trillion), on products such as canola oil, pastry products, and imported Canadian peas. Additionally, China will also impose a new 25 percent import tariff on aquatic products and pork from Canada.
