TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Season 3 of The White Lotus has drawn the attention of many tourists visiting Thailand. Beyond the country's famous beaches and luxury accommodations, one location in particular has gained popularity because of the show: Wat Suwannaram temple
For fans of the series, especially those excited about Lisa Blackpink’s appearance, visiting this temple feels like stepping into a scene brought vividly to life.
This season of The White Lotus places strong emphasis on Thailand’s rich culture, with its visuals heavily inspired by authentic Thai aesthetics. These include mural designs similar to those found in the consecration hall of Wat Suwannaram in Bangkok.
The temple, however, is more than just a picturesque filming location; it is a place steeped in artistry, grandeur, and history, even touched by somber stories.
The Historic Murals of Wat Suwannaram
Bangkok is home to many sacred temples, offering visitors a glimpse of Thailand’s spiritual essence. Yet few temples carry the same mystery, beauty, and cinematic quality as Wat Suwannaram.
Located along the Bangkok Noi canal on the Thonburi side, the temple was originally known as Wat Thong and dates back to the Thonburi era.
According to The Nation Thailand, both local legends and historical records reveal that the grounds were once used for executing Burmese prisoners of war and later became a royal cremation site for palace members.
During the reign of King Rama I, the temple was restored and given the name Wat Suwannaram. Later, under King Rama III, it transformed into a true artistic treasure.
Two of Thailand’s most esteemed traditional muralists, Thongyu and Kong Pae, were commissioned to decorate the interior of the ubosot (consecration hall), creating magnificent murals that vividly portray the Jataka tales, or the stories of Buddha’s previous lives, with remarkable detail and emotional depth.
The murals offer more than visual beauty; they tell layered stories. One side of the hall features dramatic battle scenes and dynamic characters painted by Kong Pae, while the other showcases Thongyu’s tranquil and elegant portrayals of spiritual episodes.
The contrasting styles, set within the same sacred space, mirror the complexity of Buddhist teachings.
A Destination for Culture, Not Just Tourism
Despite its cultural and artistic significance, Wat Suwannaram is often overlooked by tourists in favor of more famous temples like Wat Pho or Wat Arun. But for those drawn to Thailand’s deeper historical narratives or inspired by the modern storytelling of The White Lotus, this temple deserves a spot on any travel itinerary.
According to a TripAdvisor reviewer, the temple has a subtle charm that sets it apart. “There are no glistening glass tiles adorning the roof lines here, just plain and elegant wood. Beautiful, albeit mostly deteriorated, murals in the main vihara. When I was there, scaffolding rose on two walls - perhaps a sign that they will preserve the murals?” the review reads.
Another visitor remarked on the temple’s beauty and photo opportunities. “This temple is old. When you go inside, everything is made of wood - very beautiful - and the maintenance is good. There’s a small lake at the back, an interesting photo spot. No entrance fee here!” they wrote.
With its layered past, serene setting, and now global visibility thanks to The White Lotus, Wat Suwannaram offers both spiritual depth and cinematic magic for modern travelers.
