TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Rainy weather during the Chinese New Year is a common occurrence, as the holiday precedes spring in China, which coincides with the rainy season in Indonesia.
However, what happened on the last Chinese New Year on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, was that the rain caused widespread flooding in Jakarta. Besides the changes in surface conditions and drainage, BMKG revealed that the rain was extensive and its intensity reached extreme levels.
Indonesia's weather agency BMKG's data shows that the rain was evenly distributed across the Greater Jakarta (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi) from Tuesday night to early Wednesday morning. The rain had a moderate to heavy intensity.
From Tuesday morning at 7:00 a.m. to Wednesday morning at 7:00 a.m., several BMKG rain monitoring stations in Greater Jakarta showed high-intensity rain throughout that period. It is no wonder that Jakarta experienced widespread flooding, reaching even to the heart of the city in the Monas area, Central Jakarta.
There are 51 residential areas and 21 road sections were flooded, with water reaching up to one meter in height.
The data from the Kemayoran Meteorological Station at the BMKG Headquarters recorded a rainfall of 184 mm over the 24 hours. The Soekarno-Hatta Meteorological Station at the airport recorded an even higher rainfall of 250 mm. The rainfall in both areas indicated extreme rain (more than 150 mm).
As it is known, the rainfall also caused flooding on the airport's access roads, perimeter roads, and within the airport area up to the terminals. Traffic congestion ensued and certainly affected flight schedules for air travelers.

The BMKG weekly weather outlook for January 30 to February 6 also revealed that in the Cengkareng area, West Jakarta, the rainfall was even more extreme, reaching 264 mm. In the Pulomas area, East Jakarta, it reached 214.6 mm. "And several other areas in Jabodetabek experienced intensities of over 150 mm/day," said BMKG.
The Citeko Meteorological Station on Jalan Raya Puncak, Cisarua, Bogor, reported a rainfall intensity of 112 mm during the same period, considered very heavy. Meanwhile, the Tanjung Priok Maritime Meteorological Station recorded 91 mm of heavy rain.
The rainfall in Greater Jakarta was the highest across Indonesia during the period from Tuesday morning to Wednesday morning, as recorded by BMKG.
