TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - FAIR Forward "Artificial Intelligence for All," in collaboration with Prosa.AI, has developed FaktaIklim, an AI-powered platform designed to detect climate misinformation in Indonesia. The initiative is part of an Indonesia-Germany cooperation under GIZ Indonesia, with support from the Ministry of National Development Planning (BAPPENAS).
The open-source platform includes a website and chatbot available in Indonesian and several regional languages, including Minangkabau, Balinese, and Buginese, ensuring accessibility and local relevance.
According to Ayu Purwarianti, a lecturer at the Artificial Intelligence Center of the Bandung Institute of Technology, FaktaIklim builds upon a previous initiative to develop a regional language dataset for AI applications. Launched on Hugging Face in April 2024, the dataset powers FaktaIklim’s misinformation detection, classification, and chatbot features.
Ayu explained that the project follows three key methodologies: dataset construction, AI model development, and website and chatbot creation.
“The system uses semantic comparison techniques, matching user-submitted information against a verified database of climate-related content from reputable Indonesian and international sources,” Ayu said during a workshop in Jakarta on Wednesday, March 12.
Users can access FaktaIklim for free by entering climate-related keywords at https://faktaiklim.prosa.ai/search. "Users can submit information for verification, and the AI assesses its likelihood of being misinformation, providing references to credible sources," said Ayu, Chief Scientist of Text at Prosa.AI.
FaktaIklim compiles data from government agencies and reputable news sources. As an open-source platform, it allows researchers, companies, government agencies, and NGOs to contribute and expand its dataset. "By making our data open, we hope more stakeholders will participate in its development," Ayu added.
In addition to Indonesian, FaktaIklim supports Minangkabau, Balinese, and Buginese, which have large speaker populations after Javanese and Sundanese.
"The platform also accepts English queries, making it multilingual. While its primary focus is on Indonesian and three regional languages, users can input text in other languages as well," she noted.
Prosa.AI Product Manager Mokhamad Wildan Marzuqon highlighted that FaktaIklim is also accessible via Telegram, where users can report suspected climate-related hoaxes. "If someone encounters a potential hoax on social media or in the news that isn’t yet listed on FaktaIklim, they can report it for verification," he explained.
Once a report is submitted, FaktaIklim’s team analyzes the information and publishes verified facts on the platform. "Later, if someone searches for the same topic, the AI will recognize it as a previously identified hoax," Wildan concluded.
