TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia again experienced a monthly deflation of 0.48 percent in February 2025. Additionally, Statistics Indonesia (BPS) stated that in February this year, there was a year-on-year deflation of 0.09 percent, the first time since March 2000.
According to Minister of Trade Budi Santoso, the deflation is unlikely to continue during Ramadan and before Eid al-Fitr 1446 Hijriah.
"Approaching Eid, the purchasing power of the public, God willing, will continue to improve," said Budi when approached at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta on Monday, March 3, 2025. He asserted that food prices will remain affordable and the public's purchasing power will increase during Ramadan.
The government, Budi stated, will implement various policies to prevent deflation from hindering economic growth. "We are ensuring a well-functioning economic ecosystem," he said.
Before this, BPS noted that Indonesia again experienced monthly deflation in February 2025. Deflation in February was recorded at 0.48 percent, primarily caused by the government's electricity tariff discount in January-February 2025.
"In February 2025, there was a monthly deflation of 0.48 percent, or a decrease in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from 105.99 in January 2025 to 105.48 in February 2025," said Head of BPS Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti in a press conference in Jakarta on Monday, March 3, 2025.
Based on expenditure groups, the largest contributor to monthly deflation was the housing, water, electricity, and household fuel group. Deflation in this group was recorded at 3.59 percent and contributed to a 0.52 percent deflation. In this group, the dominant deflation driven commodities were the electricity tariff discount, which contributed 0.67 percent deflation.
Additionally, some commodities contributed to deflation due to price decreases of certain volatile foods. One of them is the price decrease of broiler chicken, which contributed a deflation of 0.06 percent. Furthermore, shallots and red chili also experienced price decreases throughout February. "Thus, contributing deflation of 0.05 percent and 0.04 percent, respectively," said Amalia.
Furthermore, Amalia explained that when viewed by component, the deflation in February 2025 was mainly driven by deflation in government-regulated price components. The deflation rate for this component was 2.65 percent.
Then, volatile price components also experienced a deflation of 0.93 percent, contributing to a 0.16 percent deflation. The dominant commodities contributing to deflation were broiler chicken, shallots, red chili, bird's eye chili, tomatoes, and eggs.
