TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ten flights at Syamsudin Noor International Airport in Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan, Indonesia, were affected by haze caused by forest and land fires on Wednesday morning, August 26, 2026.
"Six flights were affected regarding departures, while four were affected regarding arrivals," said Stephanus Millyas Wardana, General Manager of the Syamsudin Noor International Airport Branch Office of PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia (Persero), on Wednesday.
The delays began with a flight bound for Semarang scheduled for 06:50 WITA (Central Indonesian Time).
Delays continued up to the arrival of a flight from Balikpapan at 09:10 WITA.
Millyas explained that safety was the primary factor behind the flight delays due to limited visibility for pilots.
He noted that as of 06:30 WITA, visibility was only around 200 meters.
Visibility subsequently improved to 1,500 meters, allowing flight operations to resume.
Millyas stated that all affected departing flights have now taken off.
Similarly, all affected arriving flights have landed at Syamsudin Noor International Airport.
Forest and land fires in Banjarbaru, the capital of South Kalimantan, have intensified over the past few days.
Numerous hotspots have emerged, burning land and subsequently impacting flight operations.
Some of the burning vacant land is located within the airport's immediate vicinity (the "Ring 1" zone), specifically in the Tegal Arum area of Syamsudin Noor Urban Village and Guntung Damar in Guntung Payung Urban Village.
Joint personnel, assisted by community volunteers, continue to battle daily to extinguish the fires, which are spreading uncontrollably from one location to another.
