TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz claims that the security of Europe should be centered around a strong Ukraine. Scholz rejects Russia's stance on the demilitarization of its neighboring country.
Scholz made the statement following British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's announcement of a new coalition of countries aiming to increase support for Kyiv against Moscow.
Starmer hosted an emergency meeting in London on Sunday, March 2, 2025. He acknowledged Kyiv's limited supporters, could act in emergency conditions. He did not explicitly mention whether Berlin would deploy troops to Ukraine, but emphasized continuous funding and military support for Ukraine.
As quoted from RT.com, Scholz said Germany will support Ukraine financially and militarily.
According to records from the Kiel Institute in Germany, Berlin has raised 44 billion euros (Rp750 trillion) for Kyiv. Germany is the second-largest donor country to Ukraine. Germany is estimated to have provided approximately US$18 billion (Rp293 trillion) in military and other types of aid.
Scholz said all forms of security must be centered around Ukraine. He added that the peace core is the ability of Ukraine to defend itself and have a strong military.
At the U.N. Security Council meeting, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Joyce Msuya revealed that more than 11,700 civilians have been killed since the start of the Ukraine war in February 2022 and urged leaders preparing for the 79th General Assembly session to seize every opportunity to end the conflict.
The Ukraine war has forced 10 million people in the country to flee, and large-scale attacks have occurred across the nation since August 26, 2022.
Emphasizing increasing military activities has hindered humanitarian operations and endangered aid workers. As of the release of this news, nearly US$1.4 billion (Rp21.56 trillion) has been donated for humanitarian response for 14.6 million people across Ukraine.
