TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hamas stated that a new phase of ceasefire negotiations with Israel officially began on Tuesday night. They are optimistic that the discussions will lead to "significant progress".
“Hamas began a new round of ceasefire negotiations today,” said a senior Hamas official, Abdel Rahman Shadid, on the digital platform of the Palestinian organization, as cited by Anadolu.
He emphasized Hamas' commitment to engage "with full responsibility and positivity", including in discussions with the U.S. special envoy for hostage affairs, Adam Boehler.
“We hope this round leads to concrete steps toward starting the second phase of negotiations, setting the stage to stop the aggression, secure the (Israeli) occupation’s withdrawal from Gaza, and complete a prisoner exchange deal,” Shadid said.
Last week, Boehler met with senior Hamas officials in Doha, Qatar, to discuss the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza, including five U.S. citizens, without Israel's knowledge.
According to Israeli officials, 59 hostages remain in Gaza, with 24 believed to still be alive.
Meanwhile, more than 9,500 Palestinians are currently detained in Israeli prisons where, according to human rights reports, they suffer torture and medical neglect, leading to many deaths.
Indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas, mediated by Qatar, are taking place in Doha. This comes after Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu prolonged the second phase of the ceasefire agreement aimed at ending the conflict and ensuring the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip.
The first phase of the ceasefire and prisoner exchange between Hamas and Israel, mediated by Qatar and Egypt with the support of the United States, took place from January 19 to March 1, 2025.
Netanyahu has not yet proceeded with the ceasefire to the second stage because he prioritizes the release of more Israeli hostages but is unwilling to commit to stopping attacks and withdrawing military forces from Gaza.
On March 8, Netanyahu claimed that Hamas rejected the U.S. proposal for a temporary ceasefire throughout Ramadan and Pesach (Jewish Passover). However, humanitarian aid has been blocked from entering Gaza since March 2, worsening conditions in the area.
Since October 2023, over 48,500 Palestinian civilians, mostly women and children, have died as a result of Israeli genocide in Gaza. The attacks ceased temporarily during the ceasefire and prisoner exchange since January.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants in November for Netanyahu and his former defense official, Yoav Gallant, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces genocide charges in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the war it launched in the region.
