TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Monument or Monas in Jakarta, Indonesia, is closed to the public momentarily due to the inauguration process of regional heads at the Presidential Palace on Thursday, February 20, 2024. The closure will be in effect until the inauguration event is over.
The Head of the Monas Area Management Unit (UPK), Muhammad Isa Sarnuri, stated that the closure is for the general public to support the smooth inauguration of regional heads and vice regional heads.
"Monas is closed to the public until the inauguration event is over," said Isa Sarnuri in Jakarta on Wednesday, February 19.
He predicted that the inauguration event will be finished by noon, so after the event, Monas will be reopened for residents or tourists who will visit the center of Jakarta.
"It is estimated that the event will be finished by 13:00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time), then it will be reopened to the public," he said.
The closure announcement was also posted on Monas' Instagram account. It was mentioned that the closure has been in effect since February 19.
"This activity is carried out to ensure the smooth running of the inauguration event which will take place on February 20, 2025 at the Merdeka Palace. It will be reopened after the event is over. We apologize for any inconvenience and welcome the elected regional heads! Thank you for your understanding and support," it was stated in the announcement.
Daily Visits
Monas is one of the main tourist attractions in Jakarta. This capital city icon is widely visited by tourists from within and outside the region, as well as foreign tourists. As reported by Antara, the daily number of visitors to Monas in Jakarta varies depending on the day, season, and specific events.
On regular days, the number of visitors ranges from 10,000 to 20,000 people per day. However, during holiday periods or special events, this number can increase significantly.
Opening Hours
Monas is open for visits every day except Monday. The Monas area opens at 06:00. The Monas Monument itself is open on Tuesday - Friday from 08:00 to 18:00, and the ticket office is closed at 17:00.
On Saturdays and Sundays, the Monas Monument will be open until 22:00, and the ticket office will be closed at 21:00. In addition to visiting the Monas Monument, visitors can also see the dancing fountains on weekends in two sessions. The first session is from 19:30 to 20:00 and the second session is from 20:30 to 21:00.
Previously, a total of 481 elected regional heads from the 2024 Simultaneous Local Elections attended a briefing and rehearsal at Monas on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
They were wearing white t-shirts and black training pants. This briefing was initiated by the Ministry of Home Affairs as preparation before the inauguration at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, which will take place on Thursday.
During the briefing at Monas, the elected regional heads also practiced marching in formation, led by the Staff of the Minister of Home Affairs, Police Inspector General Herry Heryawan, starting at 07:00 WIB.
