TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Arrmanatha Nasir, on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, held a bilateral meeting with his Brazilian counterpart, Mauro Vieira, to discuss the follow-up on Indonesia’s BRICS membership.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia explained that the meeting was held on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting (FMM) in Johannesburg, South Africa. During the meeting with Vieira, Arrmanatha expressed appreciation for Brazil's support for Indonesia's full membership in BRICS.
"As a new member of BRICS, Indonesia is committed to actively participating in all BRICS agendas and workstreams," Arrmanatha emphasized.
In the meeting, Brazil expressed hope that the President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, could attend the BRICS Summit in July 2025 in Rio de Janeiro. President Prabowo's presence is seen as part of the effort to strengthen Indonesia's role in the forum. Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha also hoped that Brazil would support the participation of ASEAN in the upcoming G20 Summit in South Africa.
The meeting also addressed the challenges of multilateralism and the urgent need for reforming the global financial system amid a fragile global economic situation. Indonesia and Brazil agreed on the vital role of mutual efforts to push for reform towards a more inclusive global order that reflects the current geopolitical balance.
"Indonesia believes that cooperation among Global South countries must be strengthened to ensure a fairer and more representative global system," Arrmanatha stated.
Brazil and Indonesia also spoke on bilateral cooperation, especially about food security. Both parties agreed to draft a more comprehensive roadmap for bilateral cooperation. Indonesia also hoped for Brazil's support to promptly start negotiations on the Indonesia-Mercosur Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir was in Johannesburg to represent Indonesia at the FMM. The G20 FMM commenced on February 20 and will last until February 21, 2025.
The FMM will discuss two main sessions on geopolitical dynamics and the evaluation of the 20-year journey of the G20 since its formation. Prior to G20 FMM, the Foreign Ministers and Heads of Delegations of MIKTA countries (Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey, and Australia) will meet to consolidate the role of emerging powers in global governance.
