TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono has called on Ethiopia to strengthen the two nations' collaboration within the BRICS framework to ensure that the interests of developing countries are represented in global decision-making processes. Sugiono made this statement on Thursday, May 22, while receiving Ethiopian Ambassador Fekadu Beyene Aleka at the Indonesian Foreign Ministry.
The two countries agreed to use the BRICS platform to create a fairer and more prosperous world.
During the meeting, Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasized the importance of Global South solidarity through BRICS in facing global challenges.
"Through BRICS synergy, Indonesia and Ethiopia can contribute to building a world that is more just, peaceful, and prosperous, while also promoting the achievement of each country's national development goals," Sugiono said.
The visit marks a significant moment following Ethiopia's reopening of its embassy in Jakarta in 2023, which signals an intensification of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Sugiono reiterated Indonesia's national priority of poverty eradication and the importance of revitalizing the Joint Commission Mechanism (SKB) to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
Positive economic trends are evident in trade between the two countries, with Indonesia-Ethiopia trade reaching US$98 million in 2024, a 55 percent increase from the previous year. Indonesia is prepared to increase exports of its signature products, particularly agricultural goods and pharmaceuticals, which Ethiopia urgently requires.
Currently, several Indonesian companies operate in Ethiopia, primarily manufacturing household cleaning products, food, and textiles. To provide investment certainty, both countries agreed on the importance of establishing a Bilateral Investment Treaty.
They also agreed to prioritize food and energy security in future cooperation, particularly regarding commodities such as coconuts, sugarcane, and seaweed. Ethiopia has expressed a particular interest in learning sugarcane cultivation technology from Indonesia. Cooperation on wheat commodity development was also a key discussion point.
In human resource development, Sugiono encouraged Ethiopian civil servants to study in Indonesia through the Indonesian Aid Scholarship program to enhance capacity and strengthen people-to-people ties between the two nations.
