TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sweden and Indonesia signed a Government-to-Government (G2G) Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in the health sector in Jakarta on Tuesday, May 27, 2025. This cooperation marks a significant milestone during the Sweden-Indonesia Sustainability Partnership (SISP) Healthcare Conference 2025.
The agreement was signed by the Minister for Health Care of Sweden, Acko Ankarberg Johansson, and the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, Budi Gunadi Sadikin.
According to the official statement from the Swedish Embassy in Jakarta, the partnership between the two countries focuses on strengthening health services, digital health, sustainable health care development, and health policy development.
The key areas of cooperation include oncology, anti-bacterial resistance, precision medicine, development of healthcare workforce, and emergency preparedness.
This year also marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sweden and Indonesia. The celebration signifies a long-standing partnership that now encompasses innovation in healthcare and transformation of the system.
Swedish Minister for Health, Acko Ankarberg Johansson, stated that the collaboration between Indonesia and Sweden goes far beyond diplomacy. He emphasized that the collaboration between the two countries is built on a shared belief in fair, data-driven, and patient-centered care.
"Through this Memorandum of Understanding, we align our priorities to support a scalable model of healthcare that can serve a large population, address emerging challenges, and integrate the best digital and medical healthcare innovations," said Johansson.
Indonesian Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, stated that Indonesia aims to surpass the development of healthcare services by adopting advanced technology and learning from Sweden's leadership in sustainable healthcare systems.
He conveyed that this objective will be achieved through three main areas of collaboration: investment in Indonesian healthcare services to improve health outcomes through meaningful partnerships; expanding learning opportunities with the Karolinska Institutet to strengthen healthcare workforce skills, including nursing and midwifery; and support for technology transfer and knowledge sharing, including Indonesia's expertise in managing tropical diseases.
Sweden's Ambassador to Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, and ASEAN, Daniel Blockert, mentioned that Sweden and Indonesia have had a meaningful cooperation for over seven decades. Therefore, healthcare services have emerged as one of the most dynamic and goal-oriented pillars of the relationship.
"This partnership is not just about knowledge exchange-it's about investing in systems, people, and technology that shape a healthier society," he said.
In addition to the G2G agreement, the conference also featured several multilateral agreements, including:
A feasibility study grant agreement between Swedfund, the Ministry of Health of Indonesia, and Dharmais Hospital to support the development of a radiotherapy center;
Partnership between the Ministry of Health and AstraZeneca to strengthen efforts in preventing and controlling non-communicable diseases (NCDs);
Collaboration between the Ministry and Essity to expand capacity and expertise in supporting the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) control program;
Strategic dialogue between the Jakarta Government and HemoCue to implement an anemia screening program at the community level, with a focus on early detection and timely intervention.
Indonesia is actively modernizing its healthcare system, supported by government investments in infrastructure, digital health, and disease prevention.
Swedish companies have shown increasing interest in contributing to Indonesia's healthcare priorities, aligning with the six focus areas of SISP: cancer, emergency care, diabetes, maternal and child health, lung health, and digitalization.
