TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia urges the United States and Iran to exercise restraint and strive for de-escalation following the recent bouts of hostilities and exchanges of fire between the two countries in the Strait of Hormuz.
"Indonesia emphasizes that all parties must maintain restraint and avoid actions that could worsen the situation," says Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang at a media briefing in Jakarta on Thursday.
Indonesia continues to push for both parties to strive for de-escalation, prioritize dialogue, and continue the negotiation process within a framework that consistently respects international law.
Indonesia views the continuation of the peace process between the US and Iran as key to maintaining stability and security in the region following the ongoing conflict.
This measure, she adds, is also necessary to regional peace and to restoring maritime and shipping security in the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, on late Tuesday, July 7, US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed it had launched a series of fresh strikes against 80 military positions in Iran, claiming that it was in retaliation for Iranian attacks on several commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
On Wednesday morning, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it launched missile and drone attacks on 85 US military sites in the Middle East, including Port Salman and the headquarters of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, and Ali Al-Salem Air Base in Kuwait.
US President Donald Trump also stated on Wednesday that the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with Iran to end the conflict had expired.
"It's a very interesting question. To me, I think it's over. I don't want to deal with them anymore, they're scum," Trump told reporters on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, as quoted from ABC.
He signaled his patience with diplomatic efforts was over following Iran's attacks on merchant ships, calling Iranian leaders in Tehran "liars."
Trump also emphasized that Washington's primary focus now is working toward Iran's complete denuclearization.
