In Indonesia, the Worm Blood Moon phenomenon is expected to begin appearing early in the evening around 6:10 PM WIB, coinciding with the time for breaking the fast. The peak of the total eclipse will occur when the moon fully turns coppery red. Shutterstock

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Skywatchers across the United Kingdom (UK) could witness a rare partial lunar eclipse in the early hours of Friday, August 28, as the Moon takes on a reddish glow, hence called the Blood Moon.

BBC Weather reported that the eclipse will occur as the Sun, Earth and Moon align, causing part of the full Moon, known as the Sturgeon Moon, to pass through Earth's shadow.

The partial lunar eclipse will begin at 3:33 a.m. British Summer Time (BST) in London, when the Moon enters the darkest part of Earth's shadow, known as the umbra.

The eclipse will reach its maximum at 5:12 a.m., when about 90 percent of the Moon will be inside the umbra.

By then, the Moon will be low in the southwestern sky, creating an additional visual effect known as the Moon illusion. The phenomenon can make the Moon appear significantly larger than usual, particularly when it is close to the horizon.

In London, the Moon is expected to set at around 6:15 a.m., bringing the viewing opportunity to an end. Exact moonset times will vary across the UK.

Why Will the Moon Turn Red?

A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth passes between the Sun and Moon, blocking direct sunlight from reaching the lunar surface.

During a partial lunar eclipse, only part of the Moon enters Earth's umbra. The rest of the Moon remains outside the darkest section of the shadow.

The Moon can nevertheless appear red because sunlight passing through Earth's atmosphere is scattered before reaching the lunar surface. Blue wavelengths are scattered more easily, allowing more red wavelengths to pass through and illuminate the Moon.

The red light is then reflected back toward Earth, giving the eclipsed Moon its distinctive reddish appearance.

Where Can You See the Eclipse?

Astronomers recommend finding a high location with an unobstructed view toward the southwestern horizon for the best chance of seeing the eclipse.

Clear skies will be essential, but viewing conditions across the UK are expected to vary considerably.

BBC Weather forecasts suggest that low pressure could bring clouds and heavy showers to some areas during the early hours of Friday, while other parts of the country remain clear.

Central and eastern parts of England and Wales currently have the best prospects for viewing. However, cloud cover could change rapidly and remains difficult to forecast accurately.

The partial lunar eclipse comes only weeks after the UK experienced its most dramatic partial solar eclipse in nearly three decades, giving skywatchers another opportunity to observe a major celestial event.
