TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) chairperson Erick Thohir said the federation will evaluate the national team's performance after Indonesia failed to reach the semifinals of the 2026 ASEAN Championship, also known as the AFF Cup.
The decision came after Indonesia were held to a 1-1 draw by Singapore at Jalan Besar Stadium on Friday. The result left Indonesia unable to finish in the top two of Group A, with Vietnam leading on 10 points and Singapore second on eight.
“We will evaluate the results at the 2026 ASEAN Championship so the Indonesian national team can be better prepared for several important tournaments ahead,” Erick said in a post on his official Instagram account on Friday.
Indonesia took the lead through Ragnar Oratmangoen in the 47th minute, but Singapore equalized in the 66th minute.
Singapore's goal came after a lack of coordination between Indonesia defenders Rizky Ridho and goalkeeper Cahya Supriadi, allowing the hosts to level the score.
The early exit marks Indonesia's second consecutive failure to reach the ASEAN Championship semifinals. In the previous edition, Indonesia also finished third in its group with four points while fielding a young squad under then-coach Shin Tae-yong.
Indonesia's Next Challenges
Indonesia will turn its attention to the FIFA ASEAN Cup and FIFA Match Day fixtures later this year before competing at the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, which begins in January next year.
“Thank you to all the players, coaches and officials of the Indonesian national team who fought at the 2026 ASEAN Championship,” Erick said.
Indonesia's best record at the ASEAN Championship remains six runner-up finishes, in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2010, 2016 and 2020.
The team last reached the semifinals in the 2020 edition, when Indonesia finished as runners-up after losing 6-2 on aggregate to Thailand in the final.
