TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Directorate General of Corrections has granted special remission to 1,506 prisoners and reduced sentences for nine Hindu child detainees in conjunction with Nyepi Day on Wednesday, March 19, 2026.
Director General of Corrections, Mashudi, said the remission and sentence reductions were given to inmates and child detainees who met the requirements and underwent verification according to legal and administrative provisions.
“The recipients of remission and sentence reduction are those who have behaved well, actively participated in rehabilitation programs, and shown positive progress during their sentences,” Mashudi said in a press release on Wednesday.
Of the 1,506 prisoners receiving special remission for Nyepi, 1,502 received Special Remission I, which reduces their sentences partially. Among them, 326 prisoners received a 15-day reduction, 947 received a one-month reduction, 179 received a one month-and-15-day reduction, and 50 received a two-month reduction.
Meanwhile, four prisoners received Special Remission II, resulting in immediate release. In addition, nine child detainees received sentence reductions — eight with a 15-day reduction and one with a one-month reduction.
Mashudi added that the remission policy also helps state budget efficiency, estimating that the grants saved more than one million rupiah in meal costs for inmates.
“Remission and sentence reduction are not only about shortening the duration of imprisonment; they are also a form of recognition for inmates who demonstrate good behavior, discipline, and commitment to rehabilitation programs,” he said.
