TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Defense Ministry (MoD) has confirmed an incident involving the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission in Lebanon. The incident occurred amidst escalating security tensions in the region.
Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait, Head of Information Bureau of the MoD General Secretariat, stated that the incident resulted in the death of one TNI member, who is also a member of the Garuda Contingent. "One person has died, one is in critical condition, and two have minor injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment," Rico said in a statement on Monday, March 30, 2026.
According to Rico, the incident occurred during artillery exchanges in the deployment area. As of now, the clarification process is still being conducted by UNIFIL to ensure the complete chronology of the event.
Rico mentioned that the TNI Headquarters will provide more comprehensive and up-to-date information regarding the incident. "Further operational developments will be conveyed by the TNI," he said.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also condemned the incident. In a statement on the same day, Guterres referred to an Indonesian peacekeeper killed in an incident amidst the hostility between Israel and Hezbollah.
Guterres also conveyed that another Indonesian personnel was seriously injured. He expressed condolences to the Indonesian nation, especially the victims' families, and hoped for the quick recovery of the injured personnel.
He stated that the incident is part of a series of events endangering the safety of peacekeeping forces. "I call on all to uphold their obligations under international law and to ensure the safety & security of UN personnel and property at all times," said Guterres.
