TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia launches the scanless Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard, or QRIS Tap, today, March 14, 2025.
“Hopefully, this launch will help our efforts to promote digitalization in transportation become more acceptable and widespread in society," said head of the central bank’s Payment System Policy Department, Dicky Kartikoyono, during the press conference for the QRIS Tap launching.
The new QRIS feature, he explained, leverages the Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, which allows users to make payments by simply tapping their phones on the reader machine, without needing to scan a QR code.
Thus, speed becomes the key difference between QRIS Tap and the previous system. “Scanless QRIS is 0.3 seconds faster than conventional QRIS," he said, adding that the faster payment process is part of the economic digitalization development program to boost productivity, since "people can better utilize their funds.”
The QRIS Tap system in its initial rollout can be used only by Android users for the transportation sector, which implements a flat rate. These include HI Roundabout-Lebak Bulus MRT, 120 units of Greater Jakarta DAMRI, 12 units of RoyalTrans, Trans Metro Pasundan Bandung, and Trans Sarbagita Bali.
Additionally, QRIS Tap is also available in other sectors, including 2,353 merchants covering retail, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), parking, and hospitals such as RSUD Tarakan, RSCM Kencana, and RSPAD Gatot Subroto.
In the future, he said, QRIS Tap will be expanded to all MRT, LRT stations, TransJakarta, KRL Jabodetabek, KRL Yogyakarta-Solo, Damri, and the Teman Bus system in various cities.
How to Use QRIS Tap NFC
Here's how to use QRIS Tap NFC:
- Activate the NFC feature on your devices first.
- Open a payment application compatible with QRIS Tap, such as mobile banking or e-wallet apps. Make sure the application is updated to the latest version to ensure transaction compatibility and security.
- Select the QRIS Tap menu.
- Enter the PIN or password to confirm identity and transaction security.
- Bring the smartphone equipped with the NFC feature close to the merchant's payment terminal.
- Once successful, the user will receive a notification on the phone screen indicating that the transaction has been completed. Check and save the received transaction receipt.
