TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto targets e-commerce performance to achieve an economic growth rate of 6 percent by 2027. “Therefore, the government continues to support the strengthening of the e-commerce ecosystem,” said Airlangga at the Ministry of Trade office in Jakarta on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
Even though physical stores still dominate trading activities, Airlangga stated that Indonesia’s e-commerce market continues to grow. He explained that the digital economy value reached US$100 billion in 2025.
Furthermore, Airlangga mentioned that Indonesia has become a market for video commerce. Video commerce is a sales strategy that uses short videos or live streaming to promote and sell products online.
He stated that video commerce transactions had reached 2.6 billion times, an increase of 90 percent annually. According to him, this growth aligns with the increasing number of active social media users in Indonesia. Currently, there are 180 million active social media users in Indonesia, which is a 26 percent annual increase.
The Golkar politician also emphasized the importance of optimizing technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) in online selling. One of its uses is to enhance the store or trade algorithms to reach the appropriate consumers.
On the same occasion, Airlangga targeted e-commerce sales transactions to reach Rp40 trillion by the end of the year, thanks to the shopping program called National Shopping Day (Harbolnas). This target represents a 10 percent increase compared to the previous year's transaction achievement of Rp36.4 trillion.
This year's Harbolnas will take place on December 10-16, 2026. This shopping program is dedicated to promoting local products, including goods and services such as accommodation and transportation tickets.
