Indonesia Pushes OIC to Take Decisive Stand on Middle East Tensions

2 weeks ago 31

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono has urged the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to take a firm stance on the conflict in the Middle East. He delivered this message amid the escalating global situation, particularly the ongoing Israeli violence and the recent attacks on Iran.

"The OIC must be firmer and more resolute in strengthening multilateralism and international law," Sugiono said at the 51st Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers in Istanbul on Saturday, June 21, 2025, quoted from the Foreign Ministry's official website.

Sugiono made several suggestions to the OIC, including the urgent need to intensify diplomatic and political efforts, the demand for broader recognition of Palestine, and the OIC's crucial role in uniting for multilateral system reform.

"As an organization of Global South countries, the OIC must not tire in advocating for a fairer and more inclusive world order," he stated.

During the event, Sugiono once again condemned the Israeli attacks on Iran. He urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and not give up on diplomacy.

Considering the multitude of multilateral challenges, Sugiono called on the OIC to prioritize collaboration and solidarity and to maintain the OIC's relevance in an ever-changing world.

"Stop the conflicts among members, resolve differences in views," he emphasized.

Sugiono pointed out that without unity and solidarity, the OIC's voice will never be heard.

During the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers, Sugiono also advocated for strengthening economic cooperation and development among OIC member states, especially in trade, education, science, and natural resource processing.

According to Foreign Ministry records, the 51st Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers was chaired by the Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, who was the host. Fifty delegations from OIC member states attended the annual conference.

Foreign ministers led many delegations, including those from Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Jordan, Malaysia, Egypt, and Pakistan.

On the sidelines of the conference, Sugiono also met with the Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov. They discussed the strengthening of bilateral relations and cooperation within the framework of the OIC.

According to the Foreign Ministry, Sugiono's presence is a form of Indonesia's contribution as one of the largest Muslim-populated countries in the world in helping to address global challenges and the Muslim community. Indonesia was one of the founding members of the OIC in 1969.
