TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - China remains the primary destination for Indonesian swiftlet nests, with export values reaching US$172.15 million (at an exchange rate of Rp17,705 per US dollar)—or approximately Rp3 trillion—during the first half (H1) of this year, according to the latest data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS).
Although the export value declined by about 4 percent compared to last year, China remains the largest market for Indonesian swiftlet nests, accounting for 80 percent of total national exports. In terms of volume, Indonesian swiftlet nest exports to China reached 186.8 tons this year.
Exports to China are ongoing; on Friday (August 21), the Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantin) inaugurated a shipment of swiftlet nests from Banten Province valued at Rp38.7 billion.
Swiftlet nests have long been a key Indonesian export commodity to China. Efforts by the Chinese government to boost domestic consumption are expected to further drive demand for Indonesian swiftlet nests.
Last April, Indonesia's Ministry of Trade, in collaboration with the China Agricultural Wholesale Markets Association (CAWA), held the China-Indonesia Bird's Nest Trade Summit Forum to strengthen commitments regarding market access.
In addition to China, two other major destinations for Indonesian swiftlet nest exports are the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR)—with a value of US$15.7 million in the first half of the year—followed by Singapore at US$10 million. Beyond Asia, Indonesia also exports swiftlet nests to the United States, Canada, and Australia.
