TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Coordinating Ministry for the Economy, along with a delegation from the Economic Development Board (EDB) of Singapore, held the 17th Co-Chairs Meeting of the Working Group on Batam-Bintan-Karimun and Other Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Indonesia. The annual forum on the SEZ was conducted at the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy office in Jakarta on Monday, April 14, 2025.
"Several discussions were held, including progress in policies and investments in the Batam-Bintan-Karimun (BBK) region, support for the Special Economic Zone and digital transformation, as well as addressing issues of mobility and connectivity between BBK and Singapore," said the spokesperson for the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy, Haryo Limanseto, in an official statement on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.
Haryo stated that since the meeting in January 2024, BBK cooperation has focused on four clusters: business environment, investment promotion, industry, and capacity development.
Haryo mentioned that the BBK region has recorded promising investment growth; Batam achieved an investment realization of US$3.26 billion in 2024, while Bintan and Karimun reached US$118.3 million and US$1.29 billion, respectively.
Furthermore, there are 180 priority projects covering strategic sectors such as logistics, industry, tourism, technology, human resources development, and supporting infrastructure.
Indonesia's government has issued several regulations, including Presidential Regulation No. 1 of 2024 concerning the Master Plan for the Development of the Batam-Bintan-Karimun Free Trade and Free Port Zone (KPBPB), Coordinating Minister for the Economy Regulation No. 10 of 2024 concerning the Guidelines for the Preparation of Detailed Development Plans for KPBPB BBK, and Presidential Regulation No. 21 of 2025 concerning the Arrangement of Land Provision in the Batam KPBPB.
"These regulations are a form of commitment from the Indonesian government to create a more competitive and integrated investment ecosystem in the BBK region," said the Deputy for Coordination of Industry, Manpower, and Tourism at the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy, Rudy Salahuddin.
Regarding investor mobility, Indonesia has introduced the Multiple Entry Visa scheme to facilitate cross-border business travel. About connectivity, the Batam Development Authority is preparing to develop the Batu Ampar Port into an international transshipping port.
"We see great potential in Nongsa as a crucial hub for the regional digital ecosystem. Therefore, expanding and strengthening regulations is critical to supporting investment attractiveness," said the Chairman of EDB Singapore, Png Cheong Boon.
