TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Social Affairs, Saifullah Yusuf, said 50 People’s Schools are ready to operate this year. The minister, nicknamed Gus Ipul, explained that the schools are intended for underprivileged students.
Gus Ipul mentioned that the people's schools will use buildings owned by the Social Affairs Ministry, including at least 40 halls owned by the ministry and 9 halls located in East Java.
"Two universities are ready to house the schools with their facilities, namely the Brawijaya University and the State University of Surabaya," said Gus Ipul at the Presidential Palace Complex, Central Jakarta, on Monday, March 10, 2025.
The Secretary General of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board stated that people's schools will accept students from elementary school level to high school students. What distinguishes the schools from those owned by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology is that the people's schools will be boarding schools.
"Yes, we will launch them within less than 3 months, in July. The facilities and infrastructure are ready, so we will implement the schools starting in 2025-2026," said Gus Ipul.
But to begin the operations of people’s schools, he said, the ministry still requires a Presidential Decree. “We’re trying to achieve that,” he said.
Gus Ipul stated that the main qualification for prospective students who can study in people's schools must come from families living in poverty and extreme poverty.
Previously, the Chair of the people's school development team, Mohammad Nuh, stated that the people's school will implement a specially designed curriculum. This special curriculum will also continue to integrate the national curriculum.
