TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that an Indonesian citizen (WNI) died from gas poisoning in South Korea in mid-February. Judha Nugraha, the ministry’s Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens, stated that the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Seoul received information about the incident on February 16.

According to Judha, the tragic incident took place in the dormitory of the company where the WNI was employed. “One Indonesian national, identified as AH, lost their life, while another, R, sustained injuries,” he said on Sunday, February 23.

The poisoning reportedly occurred on the night of Saturday, February 15, when AH and R returned to their dormitory to rest. The following morning, a colleague visiting their room noticed a strong gas odor and found both individuals in a weakened state. They were immediately rushed to the hospital, but AH could not be saved.

“Local authorities are conducting an investigation into the incident,” Judha stated.

The Indonesian Embassy in Seoul is coordinating with local authorities and the company to address the matter. Judha also assured that efforts are underway to secure the legal rights and entitlements of both victims. AH’s remains were repatriated to Indonesia on Friday, February 21, while R continues to receive medical treatment.
