TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Instagram has started testing a new feature that allows users to give a dislike or downvote to comments on the Feed and Reels. The feature is designed to help users mark comments that are deemed irrelevant or disturbing.
Instagram Head Adam Mosseri affirmed that the number of dislikes will not be displayed, and no one can see who presses the button.
"I want to be clear: this is a test, there is no dislike count, nor will anyone know if you tap the button," he wrote on the Threads platform, quoted from Tech Crunch, on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
Mosseri also mentioned that this feature has the potential to affect the ranking of comments in the future, with highly disliked comments being placed lower.
"Our hope is that this might help make comments more friendly on Instagram," he said.
A Meta spokesperson explained that this testing aims to enhance the quality of the comments section. "We are seeking ways to help users have more control over their experience on Instagram and what they see in the app," said the company's spokesperson.
Previously, platforms such as Reddit have long used an upvote and downvote system to organize the ranking of comments. Although Meta is taking a similar step, it is not yet known to what extent this dislike feature will affect interactions on Instagram.
