Iran Declares Full Closure of Strait of Hormuz Following US Attack

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Iranian military announced on Thursday, June 11, 2026, the complete closure of the Strait of Hormuz for shipping activities, amid escalating tensions and hostilities with the United States (US).

Through Iran's national television broadcast, as reported by Anadolu, the Headquarters of Khatam Al-Anbiya stated that the strategic waterway was closed for all vessels, including tankers and merchant ships, due to what they referred to as insecurity in the region.

The Iranian military warned that any movement in the Strait of Hormuz would be a target.

The decision was made following "American aggression" and the recent United States' attacks on the Hormozgan Province in southern Iran.

The Headquarters of Khatam Al-Anbiya also refuted the US claim that ships could still pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier, Iranian media reported explosions, activation of air defense systems, and air strikes at several points in southern Iran, including Bandar Abbas, Minab, Jask, Qeshm, and Sirik.

Trump's Order

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) claimed that the US forces had launched additional 'defensive' attacks on targets in Iran.

The US military stated that they initiated new attacks on several targets in Iran, just hours after President Donald Trump vowed to launch new attacks if a peaceful agreement was not reached.

"The strikes are in response to Iran's unwarranted and continued aggression," the military's Central Command posted, adding that the attacks began at 17:15 EDT, which means 00.45 on Thursday in Tehran, as reported by RNZ.

These attacks mark the latest development in the escalation of exchange of attacks, which threatens to reignite full-scale war. The battle had paused on April 8 when both sides agreed on a fragile ceasefire.

An explosion was heard in the port city of Sirik, and air defense was activated in west Tehran, as reported by the Iranian news agency Mehr.

Trump told reporters earlier on Wednesday at the White House, "We hit them hard yesterday. We're going to hit them again hard today."

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth later told reporters during his visit to the Central Command in Florida that the attacks would "advance our military interests and also enhance our diplomatic position."

"We will strike them hard tonight, and hopefully Iran makes a good decision," he said. "If we need to negotiate with bombs, we’ll negotiate with bombs."

The United States and Iran have repeatedly engaged in gunfire since the temporary ceasefire was put in place, even as negotiators have tried to end the three-month-long war without success.

Trump has repeatedly claimed a deal is close, with no signs of a breakthrough, while also threatening to continue the bombings.

The US military targeted air defense and radar sites around the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday after a US attack helicopter was shot down near the strategic waterway on Monday.

Iran responded with missile and drone attacks on US bases in Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain. A US official said there was no significant damage.

Iran accused the US of attacking a dam that supplies water to 10 villages and violating international law.

"These facilities supplied drinking water to more than 20,000 residents across ten villages. This is a calculated war crime and a flagrant violation of international law," said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei.
