TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Around 12 HydroSub 60 firefighting vehicles and four water tanker trucks remained parked along Abdul Muis Road near the Jakarta Regional Revenue Agency (Bapenda) building at 8:18 a.m. local time on Saturday, August 8, 2026, as crews continued post-fire operations.

The 16-story building was engulfed in a major fire the previous night, with the blaze affecting floors 11 through 16. A strong smell of smoke and burning debris was still noticeable as Tempo approached the building.

Glass fragments from the fire were scattered across the ground-floor courtyard. The building is located directly next to a Pertamina gas station.

Firefighters Continue Cooling Operations

Karnawan, the Central Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service's duty officer at the scene, said firefighters were carrying out an overhaul operation to identify and extinguish any remaining hot spots.

“This morning, we are carrying out cooling and overhaul operations because there are still areas with residual heat. We must make sure nothing is missed to prevent the fire from breaking out again,” Karnawan said on Saturday.

No visible flames remained at the site as of Saturday morning.

Karnawan said 35 fire engines had initially been deployed to tackle the blaze. Three Bronto Skylift aerial firefighting units were also used during the operation on Friday night.

Cause Still Under Investigation

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown. Karnawan said the initial point of the blaze was on the 11th floor, where renovation work was underway.

“For certainty, we may have to wait for the results of the investigation by the Forensic Laboratory Center (Puslabfor),” he said.

No fatalities were reported. However, one person was taken to Tarakan Hospital after experiencing breathing difficulties.

According to the Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service (Gulkarmat) Command Center, 100 firefighters were deployed to fight the blaze. The Jakarta Metropolitan Police also deployed 125 personnel on Friday night to secure the area around the Bapenda building.

Police Question Witnesses

Central Jakarta Police Chief Commissioner Reynold EP Hutagalung remained at the scene in the early hours of Saturday, according to Antara.

“Our presence here is to ensure security, particularly to ensure access for firefighters from the beginning so their work is not obstructed or disrupted,” Reynold said early Saturday.

Police are also questioning people who may have information about the fire. As of early Saturday, 10 people had been questioned in connection with the incident.
