TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Provincial Government will conduct weather modification from March 11, 2025, for a period of 10 days. Head of the Sub-Logistics and Equipment Group of the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Michael Sitanggang said the operation is aimed at reducing the potential for extreme rainfall in Jakarta and its surrounding areas.
"We have also coordinated with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) and the West Java Regional Disaster Management Agency, which are also conducting weather modification, to ensure that the operations run in a synergistic and integrated manner," said Michael in his written statement on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
Michael said that this activity is carried out in collaboration with the Indonesian Air Force and PT Rekayasa Atmosphere Indonesia. Weather information is based on analyses from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
This time, the weather modification is being carried out by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) through a post at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport and the West Java Regional Disaster Management Agency through a post at Husein Sastranegara Airport. This operation is the third phase following the implementation on March 4-8 and March 9-10, 2025.
On March 11, a total of three flights were conducted, each lasting 6 hours and 30 minutes, to disperse 2.4 tons of NaCl. "Today's seeding targets the northwest region, the Sunda Strait and the Thousand Islands of Jakarta in sortie 1, and the Java Sea in sorties 2 and 3," he said.
The Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency has prepared a total of 20 tons of seeding material for the 10-day operation. There will be a total of 25 consecutive flights.
The Acting Director of Weather Modification Management at BMKG, Budi Harsoyo, said that there is a significant potential for the growth of rain clouds on March 11, 2025. The relative humidity at a height of 3,000 feet is still quite high.
"The potential for widespread rainfall is predicted to occur in the western region of Java Island, especially during the day and night, but it may subside in the afternoon. Generally, the potential for daily rainfall in the next four days is still relatively high," he said.
Budi said that the weather modification post in Jakarta will operate from morning to afternoon. The operation will continue to focus on reducing the intensity of rainfall and preventing hydrometeorological disasters such as floods or landslides, especially considering that Jakarta and its surrounding areas have experienced flooding in the past few days due to heavy rain causing river overflowing.
