Japan's Mount Fuji Climbing Fees to Double Starting Summer 2025

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Starting in the summer of 2025, Japan will double the cost of climbing Mount Fuji. Previously, climbers were charged 2,000 yen, approximately Rp220,000. This fee will now increase to 4,000 yen, approximately Rp439,000, per person.

This new fee will apply to four climbing routes on Mount Fuji, following the Shizuoka Prefecture government's plan, which was approved by the local council on Monday, March 17, 2024. Shizuoka Prefecture manages three of the four public routes on Mount Fuji.

Shizuoka Prefecture's decision follows a similar announcement by Yamanashi Prefecture, which manages the most popular climbing route. Yamanashi Prefecture also announced it would double the cost to 4,000 yen for climbers reaching the 3,776-meter summit, starting this summer. These increases are being implemented amid growing concerns about climber density and its impact on the mountain's environment.

Climbing Routes Closed From 2 PM

The Shizuoka Prefecture Council also approved regulations to restrict access to the three climbing routes from 2 PM to 3 AM. This measure aims to prevent overnight climbing and attempts to reach Japan's highest peak without adequate rest.

The regulation will take effect on May 9, ahead of the climbing season, which begins in July. Shizuoka Prefecture manages the Fujinomiya, Gotemba, and Subashiri climbing routes, while Yamanashi Prefecture manages the Yoshida climbing route.

Access to climbing routes after 2 PM will be limited to those who have booked accommodation at mountain huts. Staff will be stationed at the 5th station of each climbing route to verify payment.

Revenue from the climbing fee will be used to cover staff costs and environmental protection measures. Shizuoka Prefecture will discontinue the 1,000 yen donation request from climbers, which was previously used for mountain maintenance.

Mount Fuji, designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2013, attracts hundreds of thousands of climbers each year during its official climbing season, which runs until September.

Visitor Limitations Since 2024

Record-breaking numbers of foreign tourists visiting Japan have raised concerns about overcrowding on the country's highest mountain. Historically, this sacred mountain was a place of peaceful pilgrimage.

Last year, Yamanashi Prefecture implemented a 2,000 yen entrance fee, along with an optional donation, for the most popular climbing route on the still-active volcano. Yamanashi Prefecture also introduced daily visitor limits and online reservation requirements to ensure environmental safety on Mount Fuji's slopes. These new restrictions contributed to a decrease in the number of climbers scaling Mount Fuji, from 221,322 in 2023 to 204,316 last year, according to the Ministry of the Environment.
