TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Japan and Indonesia have agreed to begin talks on the potential export of Asagiri-class destroyers to Jakarta, ANTARA reported.
Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi and Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin reached the agreement during talks in Tokyo on Friday, the Japanese Defense Ministry said.
Japan has been working to deepen defense equipment cooperation, including with security partners such as the Philippines and New Zealand, since easing restrictions on lethal weapons exports in April.
During the meeting, Sjafrie conveyed Indonesia's intention to advance cooperation on defense equipment and technology, including the potential transfer of a multipurpose destroyer from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, the ministry said.
The two ministers then agreed to discuss this cooperation through a working-level framework established last month.
Asagiri is a destroyer that belongs to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and currently functions as a training ship. This 3,500-tonne, 137-meter-long ship visited Indonesia in early 2023 on a diplomatic mission.
