TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Six defendants in the Javan Rhino poaching case underwent a sentencing hearing at the Pandeglang District Court, Banten, Indonesia, on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. They were found guilty of poaching the Javan rhinoceros, which is considered a rare and protected species.
The Pandeglang District Court sentenced the six defendants to 12 and 11 years in prison. Defendant Sahru bin Karnadi, as the executor in this case, was sentenced to 12 years in prison alone for masterminding the rhino poaching. Meanwhile, the other five defendants were only sentenced to 11 years in prison.
Referring to the report on the results of the trial activities obtained by Tempo from the Head of the Ujung Kulon National Park Office, Ardi Andono, it was recorded that the six defendants were named Sahru bin Karnadi, Karip bin Usup, Atang Damanhuri bin Daman, Leli bin Mudin, Isnen bin Kusnan, and Sayudi bin Lomri.
"The Rhino Poaching Case Trial in Ujung Kulon National Park has been held with the agenda of Reading the Verdict," said the report on the trial activities. The case numbers are each registered with 171/Pid.Sus-LH/2024/PN Pdl to 176/Pid.Sus-LH/2024/PN Pdl.
The Panel of Judges who sentenced the defendants to prison and a fine of 100 million, subsidiary to three months in prison, were Hendi Reformen Kacaribu, Iskandar Ferian Elisabet, and Anna Maria Stephani Siagian.
Head of the TNUK Center Ardi Andono was pleased and grateful to all parties who had sentenced the defendants in this case. "In essence, we thank all those who played a role in the law enforcement process and the community around TNUK," said Ardi to Tempo via text message, Wednesday night, February 12, 2025.
Ardi assessed the prison sentence for the Javan Rhino hunters it is a form of firmness of law enforcement officers to maintain the sustainability of protected animals. Javan rhinos are protected animals based on the regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry No. 106 of 2018.
"This is a shared success. Those who are currently being punished are those we caught in May last year," said Ardi.
