TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Amid former President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) visit to Lampung on Saturday, June 27, 2026, his aide, Syarif Muhammad Fitriansyah, contacted Tempo journalist Francisca Christy Rosana. The police officer, who holds the rank of senior police commissioner, said Jokowi wanted to meet with the Bocor Alus Politik (BAP) podcast team in Solo, Central Java.
Within minutes, the news set off a flurry of messages in the BAP WhatsApp group. That afternoon, we held an online meeting. The first question that came up in the discussion was simple: Should we accept the offer? The four Tempo journalists who also host BAP—Francisca, known as Cica, Hussein Abri Dongoran, Raymundus Rikang, and Stefanus Pramono—unanimously agreed to meet with Jokowi.
We had long planned to interview Jokowi. He is a political figure on par with President Prabowo Subianto and the two other former presidents, Megawati Soekarnoputri and Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Since Prabowo took office, Yudhoyono is the only one we have interviewed. Even then, the interview was conducted in writing.
The last time Jokowi accepted a request for an interview with Tempo was in August 2019. After that, he did not respond to repeated requests for one-on-one interviews, even as we repeatedly reported on his policies and political maneuvers. From the time Jokowi became president until he left office on October 20, 2024, Tempo featured his face or likeness on its cover 113 times, in the form of caricatures or photographs.
