TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In a recent exclusive interview with a seasoned journalist Najwa Shihab at his home in Solo, Central Java, former Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo shared insights into his relationship with his eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, now the Vice President.
The interview, titled "(Exclusive) Jokowi on IKN, Gibran, and Adili Jokowi | Mata Najwa," aired on Najwa Shihab's YouTube channel on Tuesday, February 11, 2025. Tempo was granted permission to cite information from the broadcast.
During the interview, Najwa asked Jokowi if he had any advice for Gibran after he became Vice President. Jokowi responded briefly, stating that he had never given Gibran any advice, nor had Gibran ever sought it.
"No, never at all. That's typical of Mas VP," Jokowi said as quoted from Najwa Shihab's YouTube channel on Wednesday, February 12, 2025.
Najwa then asked Jokowi whether his son had performed well during his first three months in office. Jokowi stopped short of providing a direct answer, saying that it was up to the public to judge.
Najwa, who is also the owner of Narasi TV, further asked Jokowi what advice he had given to Gibran. Jokowi replied that he always reminded his son to "ojo kemajon". This is a Javanese phrase that means not to be too forward, not to cross the line, or not to go too far.
"As Javanese people say, "ojo kemajon"," the former president said, adding that the Vice President's constitutional role is to assist the President and to help the President when asked.
During the first three months of President Prabowo Subianto's administration, Gibran has rarely appeared in public, while Prabowo has received significantly more attention.
Even a video showcasing the first 100 days of the Prabowo-Gibran administration, produced by the Presidential Secretariat, focused primarily on Prabowo's achievements and did not mention any of the Vice President's accomplishments.
Furthermore, Prabowo and Gibran have rarely been seen together in public. For example, during a recent overseas trip, Prabowo was accompanied by his Chief of Staff, Major Teddy Indra Wijaya, rather than Gibran.
