Los Angeles Wildfires Completely Extinguished After 3 Weeks

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The deadly wind-driven Palisades and Eaton wildfires, which burned for about 24 days or three weeks ago in Southern California, were successfully extinguished on Friday, January 31, 2025. Reported by NBC, the Los Angeles wildfire was completely extinguished according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The Palisades Fire broke out on the morning of January 7, 2025 in Pacific Palisades, a neighborhood east of Malibu. The fire started in brush and quickly exploded in dry weather conditions in Southern California.

That evening, the Eaton Fire started in the Los Angeles County area in the foothills of the Angeles National Forest. This fire devoured brush that had not received rain for seven months as strong winds caused the fire to spread to the Altadena residential area.

At least 29 people died in the two fires. The details are 17 people died in the Eaton fire and 12 in the Palisades fire, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. The official cause of the fire is under investigation, according to Cal Fire, the California fire department.

The Eaton Fire swept through a pocket of the San Gabriel Valley foothills bordering the vast and mountainous Angeles National Forest as high winds pushed the flames downhill and into urban neighborhoods. The fire destroyed 9,418 structures and damaged 1,073, many of them century-old homes in Altadena, an inclusive community known for its black professionals and artists. Many historic buildings, including the Andrew McNally House and the Zane Grey Estate, were destroyed, according to the Los Angeles Conservancy .

About 4,000 acres of the 14,021-acre fire has covered urban and residential blocks, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection fire operations chief Jed Gaines said at a community meeting last week. A combination of drought and high winds off the coast of Southern California fueled the fire weather, which the National Weather Service called a particularly bad combination. The region has received less than 10 percent of the average rainfall since Oct. 1, 2024.

Governor Gavin Newsom is moving state firefighters and equipment to Southern California as a precaution, his office said a day before the fires.

On Monday, Cal Fire Chief Joe Tyler said recent rainstorms were helping firefighters battling the deadly L.A. blazes. “The rain that has fallen in Southern California has significantly reduced the potential for fires right now,” he said on X.

The Los Angeles wildfire in Eaton has burned more than 14,000 acres east of Los Angeles, according to Reuters. In the Palisades, the fire has burned 23,448 acres west of Los Angeles. Private forecaster AccuWeather projects damage and economic losses of more than $250 billion.
