LPG Out, Compressed Gas In

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The cafeteria at the Center for Oil and Gas Testing (Lemigas) in Cipulir, South Jakarta, looked deserted on Thursday, August 20, 2026. Only four visitors sat chatting at a table. Of the 10 stalls selling food and drinks, half had already closed. The rest were being cleared out by their operators.

These stalls will serve as testing sites for the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) cylinders. The government is developing the Red-and-White CNG program, under which CNG will be packaged in cylinders to replace subsidized liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Lemigas is currently conducting the third stage of its trials.

Rifai, a vendor of Madurese specialties at the Lemigas cafeteria, said he had not heard about the government’s plan to test CNG at his stall. He still uses 3-kilogram LPG cylinders, the subsidized cooking gas, and was waiting for an official announcement. “If it makes things easier, we’ll support it,” said the food vendor, who has operated at the Lemigas cafeteria since the 1980s.

CNG is a fuel derived from natural gas. It consists primarily of methane compressed to a pressure of 200 to 250 bar. This distinguishes CNG from LPG, which consists of propane and butane and is stored at a pressure of just 5 to 8 bar.
