M5.5 and M5.6 Earthquakes Jolt Jayapura at Midnight, Says BMKG

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) detected five felt earthquakes overnight into Friday, February 7, 2025, with three logging over 5.0 magnitudes.

The latest earthquake was felt in Jayapura at 00:09 a.m. Jakarta time on Friday, with a magnitude of 5.5. BMKG said the tremor could be felt at II MMI scale in Jayapura, meaning the vibrations were weak and only caused light hanging objects to sway.

The magnitude 5.5 earthquake had its epicenter in the sea 142 kilometers northeast of Jayapura with a depth of 10 kilometers.

The quake occurred less than an hour after a magnitude-5.6 earthquake, which was also felt in the city of Jayapura. This earthquake occurred on Thursday night at 11:24 p.m. Jakarta time.

The tremor originated from the sea, 136 kilometers northeast of Jayapura at a 10-kilometer depth. The intensity of the shaking was slightly stronger, at the II-III MMI, or could be felt clearly inside the house, akin to trucks passing by.

Meanwhile, another earthquake with a magnitude of more than 5.0 shook Melonguane, North Sulawesi, earlier at 9:16 p.m. local time. With a magnitude of 5.5, this earthquake could be felt at the III MMI scale. Its epicenter was in the sea, 36 kilometers northeast of Melonguane, with a depth of 28 kilometers.

The other two earthquakes were of magnitudes 2.4 and 2.6, occurring at East Kolaka, Southeast Sulawesi, at 10:15 p.m. and 10:20 p.m. Jakarta time. According to BMKG, these earthquakes were felt at the II and II-III MMI scales.

BMKG mentioned that both earthquakes originated on land, 6.3 kilometers southwest of Loea, East Kolaka, at a depth of 5 kilometers.
