TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 jolted the northwest coast of Tolitoli Regency, Central Sulawesi, on Friday night, March 14, 2025. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that tremor occurred at precisely 7:33 p.m. local time. The earthquake magnitude was later revised to 5.4.

The offshore quake originated 61 kilometers northwest of Tolitoli, at a depth of 36 kilometers. "It is a shallow earthquake due to subduction activities of the Sulawesi Plate," said BMKG's Earthquake and Tsunami Director Daryono in a statement released after the earthquake.

Daryono ensured that the earthquake did not possess a tsunami threat. The impact of the tremor was measured at intensity scale III-IV MMI in Tolitoli and also in Buol, where the vibrations are felt by many people indoors.

According to BMKG, the same earthquake could also be felt in Berau, East Kalimantan, at intensity scale II-III MMI. At that scale, the earthquake vibration was felt indoors as if a truck was passing by.

Daryono urged the public to remain calm and not to believe unverifiable information. In addition, locals must avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged due to the earthquake.

"Check and ensure that your housing is earthquake-resistant, or there is no damage caused by tremors that could endanger the structural stability before returning indoors,” he said.

BMKG data shows that the earthquake in Tolitoli is the second felt earthquake today in Indonesia. The first one occurred earlier this morning in Tomoni, East Luwu, South Sulawesi. The earthquake at 5:25 a.m. local time had a magnitude of 3.8 and was centered on land. The strongest tremor was felt at scale II-III MMI.

In addition to these two earthquakes, BMKG also noted the latest tremor, a magnitude-2.1 earthquake in Kepahiang, Bengkulu, which occurred at 6:53 p.m.
