TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tectonic earthquake jolted the Seram Sea region in Maluku today, Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at 06:39 a.m. Jakarta time, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency, or BMKG, reported.
The BMKG analysis results show that this earthquake has been updated to a magnitude of 5.7. The earthquake's epicenter is located in the sea at coordinates 3.33 degrees southern latitude and 131.06 degrees longitude east, 68 kilometers southeast of East Seram Regency, Maluku, at a depth of 20 kilometers.
"Considering the epicenter and the hypocenter, the shallow earthquake was triggered by a subduction of North Seram,” said BMKG's director of the earthquake and tsunami center, Daryono, in his statement on Wednesday.
"The results of the source mechanism analysis show that the earthquake has a thrust fault movement," he added.
The earthquake was felt in Bula, Maluku, with an intensity scale of III MMI, with the vibrations akin to trucks passing by.
Modeling results indicate that this earthquake will not result in a tsunami. Until 7:05 a.m. Jakarta time, BMKG monitoring results indicate one aftershock activity.
Daryono advised the public to remain calm and not be influenced by unsubstantiated rumors. "To stay away from buildings that may be cracked or damaged due to the earthquake," he said.
