TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Police are suspected of receiving bribes from the family of a suspect in illegal gold mining on Mount Botak, Buru Island, Maluku. The Maluku Regional Police are currently investigating the allegations.
"If the results of the investigation find that disciplinary or criminal violations have been committed by members, then strict action will be taken. This is in accordance with the commitment of the Maluku Police Chief," said Head of Public Relations of the Maluku Police, Senior Commissioner Areis Aminnulla in his official statement on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
Areis stated that the police had detained a suspect with the initials 'B' who was involved in this illegal gold mining. Suspect 'B' is said to have handed over some money to the police with the promise that his detention would be suspended.
The alleged suspension of detention due to bribes, said Areis, has not been proven, and there is no official report regarding the suspect giving money to the police so that his case can be resolved.
"Suspect B has been detained at the Buru Police detention center. For this case, investigators only need to complete the case files," said Areis.
The Maluku Police also ordered the Head of the Profession and Security Division to investigate the alleged involvement of the police in backing the illegal gold mining suspect. Areis stated that currently the Internal Security Team or Paminal has also conducted a field investigation regarding the allegation.
"The Paminal Team is still conducting an investigation in the field and we are waiting for the report of the investigation results. Until now there has been no official report regarding the victim who gave money to settle the case," said Areis.
