TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The England-based football club Manchester United unveiled its plan to build a new stadium worth £2 billion, or equivalent to about Rp42 trillion. “Today marks the start of an incredibly exciting journey to the delivery of what will be the world’s greatest football stadium,” said the club’s co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in a statement on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
The new stadium is claimed to have a capacity of 100,000 and will be developed “at the center of a regenerated Old Trafford.” The construction project plan has been circulating since last year, and the club’s co-owner hopes for the development to create a “state-of-the-art” stadium beside the existing arena.
In their official statement, Manchester United said they are supporting the British government’s strategic priority of infrastructure investment, and will be working with Foster+Partners, one of the world-renowned architectural firms.
According to the master plan shared by Manchester United, the club known as the Red Devils, the new stadium will feature an umbrella design sheltering a public plaza that is “twice the size of Trafalgar Square.”
MU did not detail the timeline for the stadium development, but word on the British streets suggests construction, which will take about 5 to 6 years, will commence this year.
Old Trafford Stadium was last renovated in 2006, increasing its capacity to 75,000 people. The new Manchester United stadium is projected to feature three masts inspired by the “trident” in the club's logo.
