TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has addressed the arrest of former leader Rodrigo Duterte. The International Criminal Court (ICC) detained Duterte in Manila on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
Just hours after his arrest, Duterte was transferred to The Hague as part of the ongoing investigation into the controversial war on drugs that defined his presidency.
Duterte, a former mayor and former prosecutor who led the Philippines from 2016 to 2022, was arrested on Tuesday morning, marking the biggest step in the ICC's investigation into allegations of crimes against humanity during the harsh anti-drug operations that killed thousands of people and drew condemnation worldwide.
As reported by Reuters, Marcos said he did not interfere in Duterte's arrest by the ICC.
"We did not help the International Criminal Court in any way. The arrest was made in compliance with Interpol," he said, on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
The plane carrying Duterte is on its way to The Hague, Netherlands. "This allows the former president to face charges of crimes against humanity related to the bloody war on drugs," said Ferdinand Marcos Jr in a press conference.
Duterte's arrest marks a surprising turn for the influential Duterte family. In 2022, the Duterte and Marcos families formed a strong coalition to win the election. However, they had a disagreement, which culminated in the impeachment of Sara Duterte last month by the lower house led by Marcos loyalists.
There are indications from Marcos that he will comply if an arrest warrant is issued for Rodrigo Duterte, despite his earlier vow not to assist the ICC.
Police investigations in the Philippines have been moving very slowly. Neither Duterte nor his top police commanders have been charged with crimes at the local level.
On Tuesday, the ICC said Duterte was charged with crimes against humanity and held criminally responsible for the alleged murder of at least 43 people between 2011 and 2019.
The arrest warrant stated that the judges found sufficient grounds to believe that Duterte led a death squad while serving as mayor of Davao City in the south and later oversaw law enforcement across the Philippines as president.
Leila de Lima, a former justice minister who was imprisoned under Duterte just months after spearheading a Senate probe into the killings, praised the victims' families for their courage in bringing Duterte to justice.
"Your voices mattered, your courage mattered," she said.
