TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chinese President Xi Jinping called for long-term strategic cooperation with Russia to build a fairer and more equal global governance system in his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing on Wednesday, May 20.
The current global situation is "complex and volatile" due to rising "unilateral hegemony," but that peace, development, and cooperation remain the world's primary aspirations, Xi said as quoted by Xinhua, according to ANTARA.
He also called for closer China-Russia comprehensive strategic coordination to promote the development of both countries.
According to Xi, China-Russia relations are growing closer with increasing political trust and strategic cooperation, expanding ties across various sectors, and joint efforts to uphold international justice and equality.
Putin began a two-day visit to China on Tuesday, days after U.S. President Donald Trump concluded his three-day visit and attended a summit with Xi.
Putin's visit coincided with the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Friendship and Neighborhood Cooperation between China and Russia.
The treaty, signed in 2001 by Putin and Chinese President Jiang Zemin, was extended on Wednesday.
